What does it do?

Average speed camera system. Uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to record vehicles at two or more points and calculates average speed over the distance between them. Increasingly common on motorways, dual carriageways, and through roadworks.

Documented capabilities

ANPR reads number plates at entry and exit points. Calculates average speed over the measured distance. Records time-stamped images of every vehicle passing through the zone. Can flag vehicles of interest to police. Can check insurance and MOT status. Operates day and night using infrared illumination.

Where it is used

Mounted on tall grey or green poles, usually in pairs or sequences along a stretch of road. Common through motorway roadworks and on dual carriageways. Identified by forward-facing cameras on gantry-style poles.
