What does it do?

Traffic monitoring camera operated by National Highways (formerly Highways England). Used to monitor traffic flow, detect incidents, and manage the motorway and trunk road network in real time. Feeds are viewed by operators in regional control centres who can dispatch traffic officers or set matrix signs.

Documented capabilities

Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras with live video feeds to regional control centres. Used for congestion monitoring, incident detection, and verifying matrix sign compliance. Some feeds are shared with police. Not used for speed enforcement. Many feeds are publicly available via National Highways' live traffic cameras.

Motorway gantries, overhead sign structures, and tall poles along the strategic road network. Usually grey or dark-coloured dome or bullet cameras. Common on smart motorway sections.

Evidence

National Highways publishes camera locations and many live feeds. Camera use is governed by the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice.
